I have a Print at ATL Print shop, and I am very happy about it! by Julio Brenes

I've got a soft spot for print, especially when it comes to brick-and-mortar shops. In today's digital age, there's something special about holding a tangible, textured piece in your hands – like enjoying my Café on my Coffee (pardon the plug!). That's why I'm excited to offer limited edition prints at the fabulous Print Shop in Atlanta, nestled on the second level of Ponce City Market. It's a wonderful feeling – not only does it look fantastic, but it also adds character to any space it graces. Don't miss out on the chance to bring that same joy and style into your home (or office, or home-office!)

Podcast Illustrations! by Julio Brenes

If you know me well, you’ll know I enjoy Podcasts, maybe a little too much. I love great storytelling, fun informative facts, and great sound production bringing me deeper into the story!

I am super happy that a podcast just like this brought me in to do these illustrations!

Series 2 of the Perkins&Will podcast Inhabit is happening! Listen to the trailer on Spotify or wherever you go for audio candy! This candy is actually good for you ...

Second Time's the Charm! by Julio Brenes

I really enjoyed designing a cup for the second time for the Cuff coffee shop in Melbourne! I tried to give it a bit of an old print feeling since the cups were going to be stamped instead of printed, turned out beautiful!

NEW MURAL WORK by Julio Brenes

I had a lot of fun creating this mural work with artist Josue Mena, check out his work here.

This is a wall for our two toddlers, they seem to love it since they keep pointing at it and smiling and talking about it. The 2 little aliens at the bottom where drawn by my 3 year old on pencil, and I just went over with the black Posca and added the body and space saucer.

new cup design, first one in europe! by Julio Brenes

This cup was created for the tech and security company ABUS, as they prepared to open a coffee shop in their new showroom, in Germany.

The process was like this: First I asked all the questions I could imagine to the client regarding the brief, and also understanding the history of the company, which was quite an interesting one and full of family values. Then researched their other products and since I obviously like bicycles I felt compelled to drop in the bike and the signature ABUS helmet (that I hope I can buy one day!) Then comes the sketch process. Thumbnails that we would comment upon until we got to our preferred "view" And then comes the final illustration drawing. We had a few comments and minimal changes that gave way to the final cup design. I am proud of this cup design. Had fun with the client, and I am lucky I've never had a bad client so far, but this was a particularly fluid process and the result is one I am proud of. If you are in Germany, make sure you visit their coffee shop and let me know how is the coffee ;)

Perseverance by Julio Brenes

This is from an email I sent to a lovely lady from the ANZ Book awards a while ago. She gave me advice on book publishing. She then re-shared the post here.

Here is my email:

I don’t know if you remember me. I met you at the @ngvmelbourne art book fair. I was the guy who drew Melbourne coffee shops on Coffee cups…
I thought of sharing what I have been up to since you showed me so much positiveness thought it would be nice to share.

Quick recap I was trying to finish this book with my two little boys (one newborn) and a very supportive wife. I was also packing the house and getting ready to move into the USA for work, so the book is a love letter… now more than ever. So we are in the USA now.

Before coming here I was literally walking all over Melbourne with a market trolley and 25 books in it, selling the book by foot and many got sold to cafes, but it was only the cafes that I personally approach like this that bought the book. So sometimes I feel bad that I am no longer in Melbourne because I could have shared it even more…. I realized social media is never nearly as good as face to face.

Just before I left Australia and after a very little but heartwarming book launch in South Melbourne my book was received at Readings! That was amazing, I saw the book on the shelves just before flying.. so I’ve seen it once… and that was so amazing and humbling… a dream I had that I did not know I had.

Just recently Monsterthreads, the store that sells beautiful cool stuff near Centre Place at the CBD is selling my book too!... I am hoping tourists will pick it up there.

I am hoping I will also find inspiration here in the US to do the next project, maybe a children’s book!...

Merci beaucoup by Julio Brenes

I wanted to share some photos that my friend Patricia sent to me. She is from Toulouse, France, she is an artist and bought the Cafe on my coffee book. She loved it… and it brings me so much joy to share these with you and know that this coffee affaire brings joy to others.. all across the globe.

Stay safe.

New You tube Channel! by Julio Brenes

Today I started a Youtube channel for Drawthatout (click here)

Its early days and still learning how Youtube works.  The sole idea is to show you how I usually draw cups, some of them will have coffee inside, some others not as I already had my coffee.  Too much coffee gets me shaky and then I can't draw (been there.. many times).

There is an additional complication to it which is the filming of it and how to position the hands.... new challenges, but may all be for the sake of learning and sharing with you the journey of drawing some of the Cafés in Melbourne.
